Home sweet home

I have a confession to make: Once upon a time, not too long ago, I was afraid of doing in-home family sessions. I remember being nervous about the lighting, the rambunctious toddlers in a confined space, and the lack of “perfect” backdrops. That’s why I find it really interesting that lately, these have become some of my favorite sessions!

What changed? I still encounter the same challenges…but my focus has shifted. I no longer try to fit a family into what I think an ideal photo should be; instead, I just try to let people relax and play in the places they are most comfortable. Bring a toddler to a new place, and what do they do? Run around like crazy, explore, run, yell, run, and often ignore all the adults around. And they run. That’s exactly what they are supposed to do at that age, but it’s not necessarily the best situation for capturing genuine personalities and interactions. At home, however, kids are comfortable. They smile more…laugh more…they have fun showing me around their little worlds.

Don’t get me wrong – I still love finding a new and unique location for photo sessions…but sometimes there really is no place like home.

Road trip

We had locations all planned out for this morning’s session…but as I drove to the house, I passed this gorgeous field with magical light. I think you can guess where this is heading…

Caution: Construction Zone

Have I ever mentioned that my older boy loves trucks?… and trains… and planes… boats, cars, tractors and hovercrafts? He’s been such a good boy lately and is so good to his brother, that I wanted to reward him with an afternoon in little boy heaven. To be honest, I don’t know who had more fun! We shoveled dirt, piled rocks, took rides in his toy truck, and even sat and watched a flatbed tow truck pick up a stranded car. I’m pretty sure he collapsed into his (fire truck) bed tonight.

Ambush photo shoot

When my husband’s cousin’s family visited from Sweden last weekend, I asked if they’d like a family photo to commemorate the trip.  They said yes, but somehow the specifics were lost in translation…

So when we picked them up and headed to this beautiful location, they thought we were just headed to Easter brunch!  Despite the fact that they were totally unprepared for a photo shoot, I think they managed to look pretty amazing.  Don’t you agree?

Thanks for being such troopers, guys!

Style

Sometimes I know it’s going to be a great session the moment I arrive. Despite the rain, I knew that was the case when I walked in the front door and
1) baby girl was sleeping peacefully after eating a full bottle. Bonus: Mom assured me that she has a very happy disposition.
2) saw awesome artwork covering every wall in the house, so I knew that Mom and Dad had great taste and artistic vision.
3) explored the old, well-maintained and impeccably decorated house to find tons of interesting and unique spots to snap some photos.
4) was greeted by the coolest, calmest, most patient cocker spaniel ever.

None of these things are *necessary* for a great session…but they certainly helped make my job a little easier!

Oh, and I just loved how obviously in love Dad is with both his wife and his baby girl 🙂

Just another day

When I first spoke with mom about her vision for this session, I was in love with the idea. She didn’t want a “portrait session.” She just wanted to capture her family exactly as it is at this moment, doing the things they enjoy the most. Baking cookies, reading, coloring Easter eggs, playing with their animals…the stuff that they might take for granted as being “normal” right now, but want to remember when the kids are off at college or playing with little ones of their own.
During most sessions, I talk a lot. I play with the kids, give ideas for places to sit/lay down/stand, act like a goof, etc. It was very different for me to just hang back and snap away. In a way, it was relaxing. The family did all the work, and all I had to do was capture it. But the weight and significance of this task was not lost on me.
J, I hope I did your family justice! I hope that when you look at your photos, you will be transported back to that day when you were focused on just enjoying each other and the love between you all. Thanks for inviting me into your home for such a special occasion.

Monkey business

I just about fell over when I walked into this little guy’s nursery! Mom’s got a great sense of style, and pulled out all the stops for the sock monkey theme. Isn’t it the coolest room?!

Hope you like your sneak peek! There are lots more where this came from 😉

Rain. Sun.

Rain. Sun. Rain. Sun.

That was the way this morning went. Luckily, we were able to dodge the raindrops long enough to get some beautiful shots of this beautiful family!

Massachusetts bluebonnets

It seems that just about every photographer in Texas has a beautiful pic of their kids sitting in a field of bluebonnets. When I was in Austin last month, I kept wishing that I could get my boys there to capture that quintessential image. Since that is unlikely to happen anytime soon, you can imagine my excitement when we stumbled upon this beautiful patch of spring flowers in a nearby park! I was even luckier to find that my boys were both in good moods, and were happy to hang out in the flowers while I snapped away 🙂 Although maybe the promise of ice cream afterwards had a little something to do with it…

All of the flower pics were taken with my super snazzy new macro lens. I’m in love.

Spring has sprung

Remember this cutie?

Well when his Mama contacted me about doing his 6-month pics, I was super excited (right after I got over the initial shock over how fast 6 months had flown by…). He is now a happy, healthy little guy, full of lots of delicious baby rolls! We were extremely lucky to get such a beautiful spring day for his session, so we took advantage of it by heading to a local park. Little D had a blast discovering the feel of grass on his bare feet!

We are truely blessed with a healthy and happy grandson. He is blessed to have such a careing mommy, daddy and two big brothers. We love them all very much! Big Sis

This beautiful girl is going to be a big sis in just a few more weeks! I had a great time hanging out with her and getting a demo of her “spinning skirt.”

And here’s one more of her amazing Mom because I just adore these pics!

A Dream

The light at sunset is usually beautiful around here. But THIS! This was a dream 🙂 It was just hazy enough to give a gorgeous glow outside, and inside was filled with beautiful windows that allowed just the right amount of light to pour into the rooms. Add one glowing Mama, a beautiful big-sis-to-be, and a loving Dad…I was in heaven! I got so many pics that I may have to add another post tomorrow with more…

A boy and his duck

I had such a great time at my family session this morning! Not only was the whole family really easy going and up for anything, but they have baby ducks, chicks, and even goats on their property…and this little guy adores them all!

Today’s Sneak Peek

Just got home from this session and loaded the pics onto the computer…and this was the literally the first shot of the day 🙂  I haven’t even looked at the rest yet, but wanted his mama to have a little peek of her handsome guy!
