The perfect gift

It happens every year. You think and think and think, then shop ’till you drop, and STILL, that “perfect gift” you chose for your sister (or mom, or friend…you get it) sits on the shelf collecting dust. Personally, I love gift-giving at the holidays, but our family has started to place a higher value on experiences and memories than “stuff.” Of course, there will be a good number of boxes under the tree on Christmas morning, but the things I’m most excited about giving and receiving include a trip to NYC, dinner out, and, of course, lots of photos. There will be albums, prints, maybe even a mug or canvas for special people around me. Because photos never fail to bring a smile to the recipient.

You can spoil your own loved ones with the gift of photography this year with beautiful, personalized, wrapped (if you’d like) gift cards to Sarah Jordan Photography. Email me for more info, and together we can create a perfect holiday gift.

Thankful

I didn’t write a “thankful” post on Thanksgiving this year because I was too busy enjoying the holiday with some of my closest family. Watching Oliver help Grammy prepare the gravy, Hudson bask in the glow of spending time with Uncle Thomas, and my mother and mother-in-law laugh while cleaning up the kitchen together…these are memories that I will treasure forever. The only thing that could have made the day even better would be having my sister and her boyfriend there too. Maybe next year….

(And yes, these are snapshots. Because everyone needs snapshots – even photographers!)

Then, this morning, I walked into the kitchen to find another beautiful scene. My mother-in-law is Swedish, and makes traditional pepparkakor (gingersnaps) every Christmas to share with friends, family, and anyone else who has been in her good graces that year 🙂 It requires hours of rolling, cutting, and baking – but the result is an amazingly thin cookie that melts in your mouth. This year, she surprised the boys by bringing dough to our house and enlisting their help in the yummy task. They had a blast, and ate so much sugar that we needed to go for a family hike afterwards to burn off some of the energy. Now *this* is what the holidays are all about…

Proud mama

I imagine that every Mom is thrilled when her child begins to read and write. It’s a huge step, and opens up a world of new adventures and knowledge. I can’t wait for Hudson to find the pleasure of losing himself in a good book, or to have a question and actually be able to look up the answer. As a teacher, I am especially excited to finally be teaching my OWN child how to sound out words and write his letters. I am incredibly lucky and grateful that he is even more enthusiastic than I am 🙂

Oh, and in case you were trying to figure out what letter he’s trying to write in the left image…it’s not a letter. It’s a truck. Of course.

The secret

For the past three years, I’ve had the honor of photographing this beautiful family. It’s funny because even though we don’t see each other for an entire year, I keep up with them on facebook and feel as though we are old friends! (I love that about social media.) I have followed C as she grew from a giggly toddler into a smart, beautiful little girl. She is happy, up for anything, and certainly wise beyond her years. This year, we took some time to hang out – just the two of us – and play in a beautiful spot with some “pretty weeds”. C relaxed, let her personality shine right through, and we ended up with some of my favorite shots from the session. You see, there really isn’t a big secret to getting great smiles…all you need to do is truly have fun!

Running

When I heard that this mom successfully ran a half marathon last week, I wasn’t surprised. Her boys keep her running most of the day – what’s a few more miles?!
Our time together was fast-paced and lots of fun. We played games the entire time, and it certainly wasn’t hard to elicit broad smiles and tons of giggles. At one point, I think mom felt a little worried that the kids weren’t “cooperating;” I assured her that there is no such thing as a toddler “cooperating” during a photo shoot – it’s my job to run around after them and capture kids just enjoying life. I hope you can tell by these photos that the whole family certainly does live life to its fullest…

Rain or shine

I was so excited for this family’s second annual photo session – right up until it started raining 10 minutes before we were scheduled to start! We met in the parking lot to discuss our options, hung around in the rain for awhile, and finally decided that we’d need to reschedule for the following day. Of course, the rain stopped as soon as they started driving away and sun began to peek through the dark clouds. I called them to come back, and we were rewarded with perfect light, happy kids, and great fall foliage! Sometimes, a little perseverance goes a long way.

I’m working on designing their album right now, and can’t wait to share a peek of that once it’s finally finished!

Little explorers

I felt right at home during this session! Two high-energy little boys, often running in opposite directions and determined to explore every inch of our session location. I loved it! We lucked out again with the weather, too – it drizzled both before and afterwards, but stayed dry long enough for us to play and laugh during the shoot. Such a fun family!
