Part 2

You may recognize some of these images from Facebook – I couldn’t resist posting a bunch while I was editing the session! (You can “like” Sarah Jordan Photography on Facebook HERE to keep up with the latest news and images).

As I said in PART 1, the connection between family members was tangible. The baby was sleepy, cuddly, and loveable 100% of the time, so we were able to really have some fun with her portraits. Come to think of it, I don’t even think I heard her cry at all during the session! Not exactly typical for a newborn session…

T’was the Night Before Christmas…

12.24.11

…and after reading that book in front of the fire, we put a nice plate of cookies and carrots (and a big glass of milk) out for Santa. Then, concerned only for Santa’s well-being, the boys insisted on running a few “quality assurance” tests on said cookies, carrots and milk. We’re so proud that they’re so thoughtful and selfless… Merry Christmas, everyone!

Happy Holidays!

Looking back through the images I’ve taken in the past year makes my heart swell a bit, because each photo evokes memories of the the families I had the pleasure of working with. I have the awesome honor of documenting some of life’s most important milestones – engagements, births, high school graduations – and all of the amazing little moments in between. In fact, it’s those “between” moments that sometimes mean the most. A smile, a smirk, an airplane ride on Daddy’s leg, giggles between siblings, a mother’s gaze…I get to capture it all.

Thank you for an amazing year, everyone. I can’t imagine my life without you in it!

Connection

As I sifted through the images from this session, I realized that they would not all fit in a single post. There are just too many that I love! So here is Part 1…

I have worked with a lot of newborns, and never – NEVER – have I met siblings with such a beautiful connection right from the start. Big bro just cuddled right up to his baby sister, took her hand, gave her kisses, and seemed completely caught up in the magic of the moment. There were no tears, no bribery, no cajoling…what you see is what really happened that day. Now I’m sure these two, like all siblings, will have their ups and downs…but something tells me that they will always have a strong bond.

I’m a little obsessed…

…with this yummy holiday treat. I found the recipe HERE and I think I’ve made about 10 batches already! It’s great to bring to holiday parties, fun for kids, and we may even leave a little bit out for Santa himself. It’s that good.

Giving Back

I joined The Mother Connection 6 months after my first son was born. I was at my breaking point and looking for other moms to connect with. Until then, I had been home with my very colicky baby worrying about my ability as a mother, my decision to stay home with him (those days were loooooong), and how I was going to find other kids my son’s age for him to play with (you know, when he wasn’t screaming!). Three years later, I can’t imagine my life without the support of the wonderful people I’ve met through TMC!

It’s run completely by volunteers, and strives to “give back to one another while giving back to the community.” My inbox is always filled with playgroup invitations, adventures to go on, and fundraising events for local charities. They helped me find a group of moms with little boys the same age as H, and we still meet often for our little guys to play and for the moms to chat. It has truly been a lifesaver for me!

I was happy to photograph the TMC Holiday Party yesterday, where I caught up with old friends, met some incredible new moms, and reflected on what a fabulous resource we have for families in our area. Judging by all of the smiles, I’d say the party was a highlight of the season for many of these kids!

In the moment

65 degrees in November?! Crazy, but we were grateful! This session (like many of my baby sessions) started inside to capture some baby cuddles and playfulness in a familiar place. Mom told me that she enjoys rolling around and snuggling her little guy on the bed all the time – so of course we had to grab a few shots of that! I loved the way they looked into each others eyes, as if there was nothing else in the world that mattered more than being together in that very moment.

Next, we headed out to an amazing field nearby (I am officially in LOVE with this field by the way. I see many more sessions taking place here in the future…). The weather was warm, the breeze gentle, and the baby happy. That turned out to be the perfect recipe for some beautiful evening images.

My inner crafti-ness

One of my favorite Christmas traditions has always been the advent calendar. Chocolate, ornaments, trinkets, pictures…it didn’t matter what was inside of those little doors – I always enjoyed opening one each night leading up to the big day.
For Hudson’s first Christmas, I decided to make him a very special advent calendar to use for his whole childhood (or longer!). Each little pouch contains a slip of paper with a special Christmas wish or activity to do that day. For example, yesterday’s read, “Make an ornament with Mommy.” The day before was, “Read a special new Christmas book before bed.” This is the first year that he’s actually old enough to understand and enjoy the calendar, and it makes me so happy to watch how excited he gets to open a pouch each evening.

**I found the instructions for the project at the Allsorts blog years ago, when I actually had time to do projects like this 🙂

Every night when I as a girl, I stared at these words embroidered and framed over my parents’ bed while my mother or father dried my hair. So when I heard that this mom wanted to use the photos from her session to create a photo wall centered around these words, I was very touched. You see, as much as I (and any mother) can appreciate these words, she actually does have five children. And she treats each as though he or she is the most important person in the world.

But it goes deeper than that.

In the span of five years, five children joined the household – some biologically and some through adoption. Many of the kids have faced challenges – physical or emotional – that helped to shape them into the strong, loveable, amazing little kids they are today. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed playing with them during the session! I think I knew it was going to be a blast when I suggested bouncing down a hill by their house, and everyone immediately started playing and laughing. Then the eldest of the bunch grabbed me by the hand and pulled me into the energetic mix 🙂

Thanks for the glimpse into your family, guys. It sure looks like a fun place to grow up!

Christmas in NYC

When I booked a session to take place near NYC, I knew that I had to pack up the family and take them along. We fit so much into our two-day trip that it’s going to take a week to recover! Unfortunately, I’m learning that as the boys get older, taking photos on vacation is actually getting more difficult. It seems that every time I take out my camera, someone needs a snack, a bathroom, a hug, or a tissue. I managed to grab a few images, though…and lots and lots of memories.

We started our adventure at the Danbury Railroad Museum. That place is amazing!! I WISH it were closer so I could hold all of my little-boy sessions there. It’s basically a large train yard with old railroad cars that you can explore, climb on and generally play with. Oh, and lots of model trains inside! It was heaven for my guys – all three of them.

The next day, we headed into the city! We saw the tree in Rockefeller Center, watched the Rockettes at Radio City, took a carriage ride in Central Park, and admired how beautiful the city is decked out for the holidays. After all that activity, we warmed up and relaxed with some hot chocolate at a beautiful overlook on the way home. All in all, a wonderful weekend! I’m thinking that this should become an annual tradition…

On the road

I’m excited and honored to be traveling to NY this weekend for a session with two adorable (and hopefully happy) little newborn boys. I will return all emails and phone calls when I get back!
