Cape Cod Family Photographer – A trip with Cape Cod Life

Cape Cod holds a special place in my heart. I grew up vacationing there, and have many happy memories of building sandcastles with my sister, hunting for sea creatures in tidepools, and souvenir shopping and eating ice cream in many of the quaint Cape towns. As luck would have it, my husband also spent many of his childhood summers on the Cape. When we started a family of our own, we knew right away that we would continue the tradition!

Dreaming of the dunes, the sun, and uninterrupted family time gets us through the coldest New England winters. Once the snow clears out and the trees sprout leaves, we begin our countdown to our annual Cape Cod vacation! As much as we love exploring new places, there’s nothing like the comfort of returning year after year to this beautiful, fun, relaxing spot. This year, we documented our trip for CAPE COD LIFE magazine, and had the opportunity to stay in the adorable, comfortable and convenient CHATHAM SEASIDE COTTAGES, just steps from beautiful Ridgevale Beach.

We spent much of our time enjoying all that Ridgevale has to offer – great tidepooling, swimming in calm waters at high tide, flying our kite in the gentle breeze, and feeding the sea gulls.

Cape Cod Family Photographer 01

One day, we ventured further up the coast to First Encounter Beach in Eastham, where there’s (almost) always an ice cream truck, and the tidal flats stretch for miles at low tide. Our kids filled their buckets with hermit crabs, fish and other creatures for hours until the tide came in, when we headed to Marconi Beach in Wellfleet to do some boogie boarding! Of course, we had to stop at SEABERRY SURF for some souvenirs on the way!

Cape Cod Family Photographer 02

We did have some clouds during our trip, but that didn’t keep us from exploring between rain storms! There is a lot of great hiking on the Cape, and we walked both the MONOMOY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE in Chatham and the ATLANTIC WHITE CEDAR SWAMP TRAIL in Wellfleet. Even after all of these years coming to the Cape, we are still discovering new hidden gems! The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge was a hit with our kids. We visited the visitor center first, where the kids each borrowed a backpack filled with the essentials for a fun afternoon – binoculars, magnifying glass, and a net! I’d highly recommend checking it out if you are in the area, but be aware that it is easiest to explore the area during low tide. The Cedar Swamp Trail featured a long boardwalk meandering throughout the tall trees. Not only was it a unique landscape, but it also provided some much appreciated shade when the sun peeked through! We were glad to have our bug spray for both walks, though – the mosquitos are also fans of these woods!

Cape Cod Family Photographer 03

We did have one rainy day that limited us to mostly indoor activities, but we all enjoyed some morning snuggles in the cottage, watching seals at the CHATHAM FISH PIER when the rain cleared, bowling at the LANES BOWL AND BISTRO and ice cream at the POLAR CAVE.

Cape Cod Family Photographer 04

Back at the cottage, we enjoyed more lazy beach days with a good amount of kayaking sprinkled in. The cottages came with access to 5 kayaks, so everyone in the family could paddle their own!

Cape Cod Family Photographer 05

On our last full day, we headed back to First Encounter to take in a spectacular sunset. Although sunsets are beautiful throughout the Cape, First Encounter is sentimental to us because it’s where Simon popped the question 14 years ago! First Encounter is a popular spot, so there’s always something new and interesting happening there. This year, a vintage fire truck showed up and the owner gave people rides around the parking lot!

It wouldn’t be Cape Cod without copious quantities of seafood – fried, baked, or on the half shell! Not all of our kids are huge fans of fish, so there were a few burgers thrown in too. It’s tradition to start our trip with breakfast at the WEE PACKET in Dennis Port, where I just can’t resist the lobster eggs benedict. Sooooooo good! ARNOLDS is another old standby that we visit at least once every trip. The line often stretches around the back of this upscale clam shack, but one bite of the fried lobster or scallops makes the wait all worthwhile. They also have a beautifully landscaped mini golf course on-site if you want a little family fun before your meal! This year, we also tried the CHATHAM SQUIRE restaurant for the first time, and while the grownups enjoyed some crispy calamari, the kids inhaled the generously sized burgers. Last, but not least, we visited SPANKY’S in Hyannis for one last seafood meal on our way back home. It was right on the water, the chowder was fresh and delicious, and the oysters were out of this world. It was a great way to end our trip!

On days that I didn’t want to lug my big camera around, we all enjoyed using the GOPRO6. It takes up virtually no space in my beach bag, and allows us to capture images in situations to which I’d never expose my professional equipment. Here are a few fun snaps I captured along the way.

Cape Cod Family Photographer 08

Just for fun, we decided to recreate an old photo during our trip this year – the top shows me teaching my sister about horseshoe crabs in 1987, and the bottom is me with my daughter Julia!

Cape Cod Family Photographer 09

Of course, all vacations must come to an end. After we packed up our car and prepared to head back to reality, I snapped some photos of the COTTAGE so you could see just how nice it was without all of our mess around 🙂 Not only was the location ideal, but the hospitality and generosity of the owners truly made us feel like this was a home-away-from-home. They were helpful without being intrusive, and were willing to share everything from where to get the best fried clams to how to navigate the marsh with our kayaks. By the end of the week, we were sad to say goodbye to both the cottage and our hosts! We can’t wait to start planning a return trip soon….

Smolak Farms Apple Season!

Smolak Farms apple picking season is here! Along with crisp weather, snuggly sweaters, fire pits, a rainbow of foliage, and pumpkin spice everything. I love all things fall, and nothing beats this time of year at SMOLAK FARMS in North Andover, MA. There are lots of orchards in this area, but Smolak is the only one I know of with an ANTIQUE APPLE ORCHARD that includes 20 varieties of apples, many of which are no longer grown for commercial harvest. And the best part? The orchard is small enough that even little ones can easily walk around the whole thing and collect a sample (or two or three) of each type of apple.

My daughter and I visited the antique orchard last week, and had a blast picking each variety as we strolled the farm. Afterwards, we cut them up and tried bites of each! Some favorites were the “Sheep’s Nose,” “Pink Pearl,” “Winter Banana,” and “Sops of Wine.” Even the names are pretty fun!

The Antique orchard opens to the public on September 30 (we got early access as CSA members), so if you’re looking for a new apple picking experience, check it out for yourself! One tip: this place is so awesome that everyone loves visiting – especially on weekends. If you can make it there during the week, you’ll have the orchard to yourselves! Grab some food at the farmstead (a cider doughnut sundae, perhaps?) and make an evening of it!

Martha’s Vineyard Photographer – A perfect getaway!

Earlier this year, I was thrilled to win CAPE COD LIFE magazine’s photo contest! Not only was my photo featured on the cover of the JUNE ISSUE, but my husband and I were treated to a fabulous getaway to Martha’s Vineyard last weekend. Without kids. Of course, I adore traveling with my kids…BUT…this was our first time away without them in over 10 years. Heaven.

June 6d BLOG

The ferry ride over was a mini-vacation in itself! A gorgeous sunset, perfect temps, and some yummy beverages set the perfect tone to start the trip.

Of all the places we explored, the cliffs of Aquinnah were undoubtedly the most spectacular. Their red, orange, and tan clay colors are stunning, especially against a bright blue sky! Other highlights included the gingerbread houses in Oak Bluffs, jumping off the “JAWS BRIDGE” in Edgartown, relaxing on the porch of our quaint hotel (THE DOCKSIDE), and even investigating some family history at the VINEYARD GAZETTE.

We even stumbled upon a big crowd waiting to see Taylor Swift leaving her friend’s wedding! We didn’t stand around for very long, but did catch a quick glimpse of Taylor and the bride through a window 🙂

I brought my “big camera” with me to explore the island, but my husband is master of the iPhone panos! I love how the wide-angle of these images really capture more of the gorgeous surroundings!

And, last but not least, some regular iPhone pics – because every vacation needs some selfies!
Martha's Vineyard 5

All in all, it was a wonderful weekend and we are happy to have finally explored this beautiful island so close to home! I’d like to say that we’ll take the kids next time, but, well, we’ll see 😉

Thank you, Cape Cod Life, for a weekend to remember!

Harry Potter Photo Session

I know that the days of group costumes are numbered for my kiddos, so I’m enjoying Halloween to it’s fullest while I still can! And by “enjoying Halloween”, I clearly mean designing magical photo sessions to capture the imagination and excitement of the holiday.

Cape Cod Photographer – Our Family Adventure

Now that the kids are back in school, the weather is finally starting to cool down, and it’s Pumpkin Latte season at Starbucks, I am reliving one of the best summers ever by going through my vacation photos! As usual, we spent two glorious weeks in Cape Cod. Our extended family has grown so much that this year, we opted to get individual cottages around a beautiful lake instead of one large house. It was simply perfect! So perfect, in fact, that we’ve already reserved next year’s trip in the exact same spot! My husband and I grew up vacationing on the Cape, and it’s awesome to see our own kids enjoying things that were such a big part of our childhoods – tidepooling, mini-golf, seafood dinners at picnic tables, watching the sunset at the bay, long walks through salt marshes, and just relaxing at the house with family.

This year, we created some new memories and traditions lakeside! The cottages were adorable, and the kids loved having access to a swim dock, floats, row boats, and kayaks whenever they needed to get some energy out!
Cape Cod Photographer 2
We had great weather for most of the trip, but there must have been a pretty crazy storm off shore! The waves at the National Seashore were unlike anything I’ve ever seen! Luckily, things calmed down enough to squeeze in a surf lesson for my husband 🙂 We explored windmills, lighthouses, and a gorgeous hike at Fort Hill – all fantastic adventures that the kids are still talking about!

We even managed to squeeze in a quick family photo shoot with Grammy and Grampy!

But mostly, we just played at the beach! Sunset at First Encounter beach in Eastham is absolutely spectacular, and we tried to get there as often as we could to say goodnight to the sun.

Merrimack Valley Photographer – Spring beauty

It’s just not Spring until this magical field of crocus and daffodils blooms! The colors, the warmer temps, the sweet evening light – it’s all pretty spectacular.

A few nights ago, I brought my own family to enjoy the field of color. First, I spent some time capturing my daughter’s two-year-old photos, complete with a tea party and wagon ride for her friends!
Merrimack Valley Photographer

Then, we were able to grab a few shots of the rest of the family (with some help from my amazingly patient friend Casey). I LOOOOOOVE that first one of my hubby and his little girl – I think it’s going to have to end up in a frame somewhere!

LA Maternity Photographer – a new nephew!

My sister is having a baby! I’ll have a new nephew next August, and I am over the moon excited about it. She may live on the other side of the country, but I hope to see that baby boy as often as possible – so you may notice more travel sessions available in LA over the next few years 😉

This past weekend, we threw the parents-to-be a “You are my Sunshine” baby shower back east, and it was so much fun!

My daughter was very intrigued by the celebration and the idea of a new cousin. She even appointed herself as the official gift-giver! It will be so interesting to see how they interact when the baby is finally born.
LA maternity photographer 2

It may have been freezing outside, but we spent about 30 seconds grabbing a couple of maternity pics at the end of the day. Aren’t they so sweet?! I still can’t get used to seeing my little sister with a baby belly!

How we kept busy…

…during the epic snow of 2015.

We finally gave the boys a “big boy room”! The last time I decorated this room was when I was 7 months pregnant with my first baby – about 7 years ago! Since then, it’s served as a nursery for two sweet boys, and became a Lego playroom for the past year or so. Of course, the boys still needed to sleep in there, so walking across the room (and over piles of Legos) to tuck them in was a bit of a challenge. I loved decorating my DAUGHTER’S ROOM while I was pregnant with her, and the boys were long overdue for an update! While the snow fell this month, we moved the Legos into the basement play area and spent many hours creating a room that inspired creativity, encouraged curiosity, and made reading luxurious. The best part of the project was that boys were involved in almost every step! I think my favorite memory from this whole venture was the photo shoot we held for their favorite Lego creations. They spent the morning building, then I helped them photograph their projects, print out some photos, and hang them above their art desk. So much fun!

Everyone’s favorite spot in the room is the “reading nest” by the window – it’s so comfy that I sneak in here to read sometimes too! The print hanging on the wall here was made using images that we took while looking through the microscope on yet another snow day.

And here’s the whole room!

Since this project wasn’t originally going to be this massive, I didn’t think to take any “before” photos. You can get an idea of what we were working with from this snap, though.

Sunflower photo session – 18 months!

The past 18 months have undoubtedly been the most chaotic of my life. Between caring for three crazy kids, operating a successful business, and running on little to no sleep (thanks, Julia!), I barely have a second to breath. Coffee has become a necessity, and days often fly by in a blur of spilled milk, bandaids, sharks, emails, dolls, and snuggles. And yet, as hectic as life is, I can’t imagine it any other way. Ok, so maybe I’d like a little (lot?) more sleep…but aside from that, I am incredibly grateful to be able to spend my days at home with my children, even if it means long nights at the computer.

Julia has grown into a toddler in the past few months, and amazes us every day with new words, opinions, and abilities. She desperately wants to keep up with her brothers, resulting in a lot of skinned knees, laughter, and interests in things that are far beyond her years. Just the other day, Hudson taught her to karate chop – and she’s been doing it constantly ever since. While clinging to her favorite doll. And belting out the lyrics to “Let it Go.” Yup, she’s got personality alright!

I decided to head out to the Colby Farm sunflowers last week to scout things out for an upcoming session. Of course, it was also a perfect excuse to take some 18 month photos of my baby girl! We had a blast, and I love the images we captured in the short time we were there.

Cape Cod Photographer – Heaven on earth

Our family just got back from heaven on earth. We are refreshed, renewed, and already counting down the days until next year’s trip!

We spent the last two weeks enjoying sunshine, sand, and seafood in Cape Cod, MA. My husband and I grew up going to the Cape with our own families, and it’s been incredible to be able to take our children there now and watch them enjoy the same traditions and adventures that we grew up with.

We were lucky to have some beautiful weather this year, so we spent the majority of our time splashing around and making sandcastles at our favorite beaches:

Cape Cod Photographer 1July 5bCape Cod Photographer 2

When we weren’t at the beach, we enjoyed some yummy meals out, playing cards on the porch, and sorting the 394867 shells that came home with us each day!
Cape Cod Photographer 3

But somehow, we always found our way back to the water…
Cape Cod Photographer 4

This year, we took the kids on a hike to a new beach, and it was truly one of the most gorgeous places I’ve ever seen. The boys nicknamed it “hidden beach,” and the time we spent there was simply magical!

Until next year!

Methuen MA Photographer – Happy Father’s Day!

We don’t really do presents in our family. At least not in the typical buy-something-for-a-holiday-just-because-you’re-supposed-to sort of way. We are very grateful for everything we already have – and most of that can’t be bought at a store anyway. Instead, we try to celebrate special days in ways that make the person of honor feel loved, appreciated, and very happy 🙂

This year, my hubby is not home for Father’s Day morning, because he took both of our boys on their very first camping trip! Talk about an awesome Daddy… I can’t wait to hear all about their adventures when they get home! Since I can’t exactly bring him breakfast in bed, I thought it might be nice for him to wake up to a recap of the past year in photos. He does so much as a Daddy that it’s hard to capture it all, but I think I got the things that mean the most to us – coaching, snuggling, reading, running, Lego-ing, riding, laughing, running…he really does it all.

Happy Birthday, Julia! [Methuen MA Baby Photographer]

Dearest Julia,
One short year ago, we welcomed you into our hearts. With your birth, our family was complete, and my heart grew bigger than I ever thought possible. I love your sweet giggles, your sleepy snuggles, and your already fierce independence. You are so lucky to have two big brothers who drop everything to dry your tears. They may have some interesting (and messy) ways to make you laugh, but hey – whatever works! And at the end of the day, watching the three of you snuggle up with a good book brings me so much joy. How did I get so lucky? I certainly don’t take this life for granted. I am truly blessed, and for that, I am forever grateful.

I love you, baby girl!

Happy First Birthday!

Julia’s first birthday party! [Methuen MA Lifestyle Photographer]

March 15

See that girl up there? That’s my baby. The same baby girl who looked into my eyes a year ago, curled her tiny hand around my finger, and instantly stole my heart. She is turning one this week, and I already yearn for those newborn days. I miss sitting on the couch and snuggling for hours while one episode of house hunters blends into the next. I long for that warm, sweet breath against my neck as she takes a much needed nap on my chest. I miss the excitement of witnessing the first smile, laugh, roll and step. Yes, this first year of life is amazing and fleeting and filled with irreplaceable memories; but at the same time, I find myself dreaming about what the future has in store for her. Will she continue to look up to her brothers with adoring eyes, begging to join in their games of Legos and trucks? What books will she like? Will she enjoy science like her Mama? Will her love of music and movement lead her to years of dance classes? Will she still welcome me into her life when she goes through the dreaded middle school years?

Only time will tell what life has in store for Julia. In the meantime, we enjoyed celebrating this important milestone! I wish I could take credit for all of the gorgeous details, but I owe it all to some amazing ladies! The incredible candy buffet was courtesy of the fantastic duo over at The Candy Dish in North Andover. I can’t recommend them enough! Not only did they provide all of the yummy treats, but they also set everything up beautifully, and then came and CLEANED EVERYTHING UP after the party! They also sell a variety of amazing homemade candies – perfect for Easter Baskets 😉

The Pinterest-inspired dum-dum decorations were courtesy of my dear friend Lindsay – a woman with a big heart and a ton of patience! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Happy First Birthday, Julia! What a wonderful first party it was!

California Dreaming [Methuen MA Lifestyle Photographer]

As I saw down to catch up on blogging, I was a bit overwhelmed by how far behind I was. I haven’t even gone through the images from our family trip to Cape Cod last July, but for some reason I just couldn’t resist starting with my recent trip to Cali! I had an amazing girls’ week with my daughter, mother and sister in sunny (warm, gorgeous) Southern California. Of course we enjoyed the ocean breezes and sand in our toes, but it was truly all of the laughing, eating, walking, and shopping that made this such a fantastic week. Just looking through these images is helping me forget about the foot of snow currently outside my window. Well, almost…
