Andover Newborn Photographer -Looking back

After taking a VERY long break from blogging, I was finally motivated to start posting again as I was editing this sweet baby’s first year photos. That’s right, he just turned ONE, and I hadn’t blogged his newborn photos yet! I’ve loved watching him grow throughout the past year during his mini sessions – I’ll try to post those in the coming weeks.

Photographing a newborn and a toddler is always a bit of a challenge, but with a little time, love, and attention, big brother slowed down, snuggled up, and allowed us to get some awesome shots together! The key to capturing this combination is certainly patience 😉

LA Newborn Photographer – itty bitty sweetness

I was going to start this post by apologizing for the excessive number of photos in it….but the truth is that I’m not sorry at all! You see, this bundle of sweetness is my brand new nephew, and I’m sort of obsessed with him 🙂 He was just 19 days old when I first got to breathe in his sweet baby smell, snuggle him into my arms, and stare at him for hours. While I wish he lived a little (ok, a lot!) closer to us, I’m grateful that I had this time with him while he was still itty bitty! Of course, we managed to squeeze in some photos between all of that snuggling. Since he was still so little and new, we opted to keep things simple and did all of the photos inside. In fact, even though they just moved into a gorgeous new house, we ended up sticking to just two rooms with pretty light. With a baby that cute, who cares about pretty scenery?! I’m sure by his 6-month session we’ll be trekking all over Culver City

If anyone out there is looking for an LA Newborn Photographer (or LA family photographer, or LA maternity photographer, or LA child photographer etc.) let me know! I’d love another excuse to get back to Cali for another visit.

As much as I adored meeting my nephew, I was equally excited to see my sister in her new role as Mommy <3 She's been around babies and kids all her life, so while I wasn't surprised that she was a natural, it was still so beautiful to watch her love and nurture her very own little one. I’m already counting down the days until I can squeeze him again over the holidays…

Why I love albums (and you will, too!)

It all started when I ran out of wall space in my home. As a photographer, I understand the importance of printing my own family’s photos, and displaying them around the house. But I take a lot of pictures. I mean, a LOT. And I love so many that it’s virtually impossible to choose which ones to display and which to leave on a hard drive somewhere. Each photo captures an emotion, a nuance, a look, a moment in time that I’ll never get back – and I wanted to be able to look at and enjoy each and every one, without having to pick and choose. So, I started creating albums.

I have albums everywhere. I have albums filled with photos of my everyday life, albums with styled session images, and albums of simple snapshots. There are albums in my kid’s rooms, and albums stacked at arm’s reach in the family room. And WE LOOK AT THEM. All the time. My kids often choose to leaf though old albums in lieu of bedtime stories at night, and we laugh and talk about the memories they hold. It makes me so happy to see my photos being enjoyed and appreciated on a daily basis.

That got me thinking – if I appreciate albums that much, then my clients would probably love them too. While a canvas on the wall can display a favorite image from a photo session, what happens to all of those other “in between” shots that capture the little things that define a family? Mom snuggling her babies…a spontaneous hug…Dad giving his son a piggyback ride. All of these images tell a story, and they belong TOGETHER.

And that’s how I made the decision to include an heirloom quality 10×10 photo album with each and every full session that I do. The feedback I’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive. In the past, people have let their images sit on a USB in a drawer somewhere, with the intention of eventually printing them…someday. Now, I do all of the work, and families can enjoy the images easily and often. And that makes me very, very happy.

I’ll be blogging album images more often in the future. For now, here is a newborn album that I recently delivered. It was so beautiful that I was almost sad to see it go!

Tewksbury Newborn Photographer – Never too late!

I often receive emails from concerned parents who are worried that they waited too long to do newborn photos. The truth is that sometimes it’s actually BETTER to schedule photos for around 6-8 weeks old instead of right away. Why? Parents are more relaxed and comfortable with their new roles, breastfeeding mothers have settled into a nursing routine, and the baby is more alert. Of course, there are tradeoffs – the baby is less likely to fall into a deep sleep, and has typically filled out a bit from the newborn stage. But the bottom line is that it’s never too late to photograph a baby!
*One note – it’s still important to schedule a newborn/baby session while you’re still pregnant in order to ensure a spot on my calendar!

This happy girl was wide awake for most of the session, but we were able to soothe her into a little nap towards the end. And she even flashed a few smiles! I can’t wait to see how much she’s grown in a few months for her milestone mini-session!

Waltham Newborn Photographer – Big love

When we started planning out this newborn session, Mom was a little concerned that their home wasn’t big or bright enough to use for a session. Well, I think these images are proof that even small spaces can be beautiful! Just look at all that love! My favorite part of the session was when their doggie got into the pics 🙂 He was so sweet and curious – already a fantastic big brother!

Andover Newborn Photography – Baby brother

I first met this family last fall, at their MATERNITY SESSION. The girls were playful, loving, happy – and very excited to meet their baby brother! It’s always so helpful to get to know older siblings before a newborn session. Bringing a new baby home can be a major adjustment for a family, and I love being a familiar, friendly face for the big kids.

On this snowy morning, we snuggled, played, and eventually got baby brother to sleep. Even the dog got in on the love!

Of course, we had to snap a few shots for their Christmas card!

Andover Photographer – Natural parents

Many first time parents are a bit overwhelmed when they bring their little ones home from the hospital. Adjusting to long (often sleepless) nights, frequent feedings, and caring for this beautiful – but demanding – new boss of the household can be quite a shock.
So when I knocked on the door to photograph this new family, I expected to walk into chaos. But much to my surprise, all that greeted me was love and patience. That’s not to say that the baby wasn’t demanding, or that anyone had gotten much sleep the night before – but Mom and Dad were so over the moon in love with their baby girl that they welcomed the challenges that came with with her. Mom gives some of the credit to all of the prenatal education and fitness classes she took at Acelleron Health and Fitness . Who knows if that was the reason, or the family that poured through the door to help out, or if being parents just came naturally to them…but I think you can just feel the love and joy in the images we captured together.

Pinkle Toes Photography workshop

Way back in 2011, I attended a Pinkle Toes Photography workshop in Austin, TX that changed my life. I know, that sounds really dramatic…but I swear, it’s true! That weekend, I began to put the pieces of my business together, made lifelong friends, and confirmed my decision to transition from my career in Education to Photography. It’s a trip that I hold dear to my heart and will never forget.

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to hang out with a different (but equally fantastic) group of women in Ridgewood, NJ for a new and improved Pinkle Toes Photography workshop! I was amazed and humbled by how much talent surrounded me (seriously, these women are incredible!). Of course, the best part of the whole weekend was the opportunity to visit and learn from my dear friend Michele. Together, we laughed, talked, learned, and, of course, took some photos! Although I actually managed to keep my camera off for most of the trip, I did snap a few images during our time together. I hope you enjoy the photos below, and then take a few minutes to see the images captured by the other attendees!

Now I hope you’ll check out my friend Lena’s photos from the workshop at Live Love Laugh Photos – Ridgewood Family photographer!

There’s no place like home… [Methuen MA newborn photographer]

…for a newborn session!
When mom first contacted me about this session, she was concerned that their house wasn’t big enough or fancy enough for a photo session. Luckily, with kids this cute, we don’t need anything else! Although they did have a lovely home, we ended up plopping down on Mom and Dad’s bed, and barely moving for the whole time I was there! Between the snuggles, books, and giggles, we were able to keep busy and happy while capturing these sweet images of those magical first moments as a family of four.

Baby brother [Lowell MA Newborn Photographer]

Just like his big brother TWO YEARS AGO, this sweet little guy was sleepy, content, and more than happy to pose for his newborn session this fall! We had originally planned to do most of the session indoors, but were lucky enough to have a gorgeous fall day – so we found a pile of leaves and hung out there for awhile!

Eventually, we did move inside to capture some holiday card pics and spend some time with Great-Grandpa.

It’s been so much fun watching this family grow (and grow up!). Next time I see them, those boys will be running circles around me!

Life. In style. [Andover MA Lifestyle Newborn Photographer]

While I do enjoy doing some classically posed newborn photography, my heart feels fullest during a lifestyle newborn session. The term “lifestyle” refers to a type of photography that focuses on the interactions between people in everyday situations. There are no artificial lights, no forced poses, and the goal is to document life as it happens in an artistic way.

This session was filled with exactly that. What you see is what you get! Big sis genuinely adored her little brother, and the whole family enjoyed simply being together. We read books, jumped on the bed, snuggled….all things that characterize this amazing family’s life together.

The stars aligned [Gloucester MA Newborn Photographer]

Most newborn photo sessions take place when the new baby is just a week or two old. We capture sweet, scrunchy, sleepy newness, and I’m usually able to get images of the baby all snuggled up asleep in at least a few different setups. So when this family scheduled their baby’s first photos to take place about 6 weeks after the birth, I didn’t know what to expect! Well, that’s not entirely true, since I did photograph their FIRSTBORN during the same time frame… But still – there are a lot of unknowns. Would the baby sleep at all? Would she be colicky and cry a lot? Would big brother still be interested in hanging out with her?

Well, just like our last session – all the stars aligned, and we captured some beautiful moments. In fact, there are quite a few things about waiting a few weeks to do a newborn session that made the whole thing much more relaxed and enjoyable:
Mom had some time to heal after the birth.
Some of the chaos that goes along with bringing a new baby home had subsided.
Everyone was able to focus completely on enjoying the session instead of trying to get to know the newest family member.

And we even lucked out and got baby girl to sleep for long enough to snap some shots out in her Grandfather’s garden! I’d say it was a success.
I’m already looking forward to seeing these kiddos again for their HOLIDAY CARD MINI SESSION next month, and then again next summer!

Sweet baby boy [Methuen MA Newborn Photographer]

Now that this little guy is already 3 months (see his beautiful smile HERE!), I thought I should finally blog his newborn session!
We started out with some peaceful shots inside, just us and a window. I love that we took the time to get those simple, classic shots before heading outside with the rest of the family!

How lucky is he to have two big sisters who completely adore him? They were so sweet – holding him, talking to him, touching his little fingers and counting his sweet tiny toes.

Baby sister

It’s been pretty quiet around here lately. With THREE little ones to care for now, computer time has been pretty scarce! That’s right, my daughter Julia Kate was born on March 19th at 11:17am, weighing in at 7lbs, 12oz. My two boys were both over 9 pounds at birth, so having such a teeny baby is such a different experience for me! The big brothers absolutely adore their little sister, and ask to hold her whenever they can. I’ll be posting lots more pics of both Julia and her brothers in the weeks to come, but here are some images from our time in the hospital. The first pic is one that I will treasure forever…it was snapped by my amazing husband during the c-section.

Just a reminder that I’m officially on maternity leave until May! Until then, I’ll be returning emails and phone calls in between snuggles and feedings 😉

A room of her own

Well, here it is! My little girl’s nursery is everything I wanted it to be for her – soft, calm, pretty, and filled with meaningful little things for her to enjoy. It’s hard to imagine that just a few months ago, this was my office – green, pretty dark, cramped, and filled with photography stuff! I can honestly say that I don’t even mind that my “office” space is now in the midst of toy central in the family room – I can’t wait to bring my baby girl home to a room of her own!

A few of my favorite things:
*The dresses above the crib were mine (thanks to my mom for saving them all these years!), and I love how sweet they look on the wall.
*The little plate on the tall dresser with the last stanza of the poem “Song for a Fifth Child” by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton. My mother had the same words displayed on her her wall when I was a child, and I remember reading them every night while getting my hair blown dry before bed.
*The small Beatrix Potter bank on top of the stack of books on the shelf was saved from my own nursery
*The dressers that I found on Craigslist fit with the feel of the room perfectly! I love that they work well in her nursery, but they can also grow with her in future rooms.
*The framed pink flower photo on the shelf is a j.imprint taken by my fabulous friend Michele, of Pinkletoes. Check out the link to see how you can contribute to a great cause by purchasing your own j.imprint!

Baby girl shouldn’t be coming home to this room for at least a few more weeks now, so in the meantime I am enjoying reading, rocking, snuggling my boys and daydreaming in here. Soon enough, it will be filled with the sounds of a newborn, and I doubt it will ever be this neat and peaceful again!
