2012: My Project 365

Exactly one year ago today, I began the most intensive personal photography project I’ve ever attempted – a Project 365. For all of 2012, I captured one image a day that reflected something about my life. Most photos involved my two little boys, since, well, my life basically revolves around them 🙂 Of course, there were times that I wasn’t with them (like my sister’s wedding in Mexico!) and days when I chose to capture a different subject in my life, but looking at the completed project makes me acutely aware of the depth of my love for my family.

I’m not gonna lie – some days this project was just plain hard. There were days when it rained all day, the kids (or I) were sick, and it got to be 5pm before I remembered to drag out the camera bag. But then there were others where photo ops seemed to throw themselves at me all day long! Our family vacations, daytrips, days when the boys were happy and the sun was shining…it was often hard to choose just one image!

I learned a lot in the past year, and the lessons were not always related to photography. I learned to slow down and look around. To notice the little things – pockets of beauty where I least expect to find them. I learned the importance of capturing memories for my boys, since life can change in the blink of an eye. It’s already a bit hard to look back at the first few images of 2012 and remember just how dramatically they’ve grown in the past year.

Although I won’t be doing a Project 365 for 2013, I will continue to bring my camera wherever I can. Watching my boys as they viewed this year’s slideshow for the first time was absolutely wonderful. They laughed, squealed, and smiled as they relived the memories of 2012. In fact, they’ve been talking about our adventures for the past hour, and we are already planning out an amazing 2013. THAT is my inspiration. I will continue to shoot with their giggles, happiness, and love in mind.

For those of you curious (and patient enough) to watch my culminating project of 2012, I present to you….

**The slideshow will take a minute or two to load (more if you are viewing on a mobile device), so turn on your speakers, sit back, and wait for the show to begin!

  1. Cindy says: Sarah, I cant express how much I enjoyed watching the slide show. I watched it twice and I told David he couldn't jump in to view it half-way....he had to start at the very beginning. :-) You have a beautiful family and you and Simon really are blessed! I look forward to future editions of Project 365! It brought us a lot of joy! xo on 07.27.13 @ 12:56 pm

Project 365 – Weeks 10 and 11

Oops! I just realized that I haven’t posted my 365 pics for a few weeks now. Life has been pretty crazy! I’ll keep the words to a minimum and just let the photos show you what we’ve been up to.

Project 365 – Week 9

We dodged the stomach bug and flu for a long time this winter, but sickness finally caught up with us last week. As awful as it was to see Hudson so miserable, I’ll admit that I did enjoy the extra snuggles and love. He’s growing up so fast that sometimes it takes me by surprise that he still needs his mommy’s hugs and kisses to make things feel better.

Of course, as soon as his fever broke, his independent nature took over once again and he taught himself to snorkel. I swear he’d wear that snorkel gear to the dinner table if I let him!

Project 365 – Week 8

The beach? In February? Really? This winter is certainly not the norm, but we are loving it! Last week’s highlights included:
*Outlet shopping with Grammy
*Making projects at Lowes
*The boys spending a night at Grammy and Grampy’s house
*Ollie pretending to be a big brother

I’m starting to look forward to daily pics that include some green leaves and flowers soon…

Project 365 – Week 7

Last week in our world…
*We celebrated Valentines Day with some yummy treats
*Oliver bonded with his new pal, Elmo
*We enjoyed an awesome visit to the WENHAM MUSEUM
*Hudson perfected his “fast turn” on his two-wheeler
*We took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and headed outside for a hike with Farmor

Project 365 – Week 6

This winter has been incredibly warm so far, and we are taking full advantage of it by getting outside every chance we get! Last week, we even did a little experiment with various toy planes. Hudson and I made predictions about which ones would fly fastest and farthest, then we headed outside to test our hypotheses. He (and I) loved it!

In other news this week:
*Oliver is getting more interested in books every day. It made me so happy and proud to walk into his room to find him “reading” to all of his stuffed friends.
*Hudson spent hours addressing and decorating valentines for his friends and family
*Oliver learned to ride his first trike (and was so proud that he refused to take his helmet off for hours!)

Project 365 – Week 5

Well, I officially made it through the first month of my Project 365! Although I realized yesterday that it’s actually a Project 366 since this year is a leap year, but I don’t know if that warrants a name change…

Last week in our world:
*Hudson climbed his first tree
*Oliver started swimming independently (as long as Daddy was still only an arm’s length away!)
*We enjoyed a lunch out WITHOUT any tears (yes, that’s a first!)
*I found myself enjoying this project more every day 🙂 Hopefully that will continue for the rest of the year!

Project 365 – Week 4

Ok, so I’m a little behind with last week’s post, but better late than never!

Last week’s images include:
*sledding for the first time at Grammy and Grampy’s house
*Enjoying some outdoor time with sticks and dirt
*Looking for W’s in Dragon books at the library (I know, random)
*Oliver’s new obsession: basketball
*Bonding with our fish, Pickup Truck

The weather was so mild for most of the week that I’m starting to wonder if winter will ever truly arrive this year!

Project 365

If you saw my post from a few days ago, you know that I’ve been thinking about challenging myself to focus more on the “little” things around me this year. Everyday images that will capture my life and family as I see them.

And so, I decided to commit to snapping one pic a day, each and every day for a year. There are no real rules, except that the image must reflect something about my life right now…generally, something I don’t want to forget. I’m not going to overthink it, overpose it, or force moments to happen. I just want to capture reality – my life, my memories, and my heart.

And so, here are the images from week one! They include a winter picnic, Oliver snuggling his favorite blanket, and a snap from the day we turned Oliver’s carseat around for the first time.
