Cape Cod Photographer – Heaven on earth

Our family just got back from heaven on earth. We are refreshed, renewed, and already counting down the days until next year’s trip!

We spent the last two weeks enjoying sunshine, sand, and seafood in Cape Cod, MA. My husband and I grew up going to the Cape with our own families, and it’s been incredible to be able to take our children there now and watch them enjoy the same traditions and adventures that we grew up with.

We were lucky to have some beautiful weather this year, so we spent the majority of our time splashing around and making sandcastles at our favorite beaches:

When we weren’t at the beach, we enjoyed some yummy meals out, playing cards on the porch, and sorting the 394867 shells that came home with us each day!

But somehow, we always found our way back to the water…

This year, we took the kids on a hike to a new beach, and it was truly one of the most gorgeous places I’ve ever seen. The boys nicknamed it “hidden beach,” and the time we spent there was simply magical!

Until next year!

Methuen MA Photographer – Happy Father’s Day!

We don’t really do presents in our family. At least not in the typical buy-something-for-a-holiday-just-because-you’re-supposed-to sort of way. We are very grateful for everything we already have – and most of that can’t be bought at a store anyway. Instead, we try to celebrate special days in ways that make the person of honor feel loved, appreciated, and very happy 🙂

This year, my hubby is not home for Father’s Day morning, because he took both of our boys on their very first camping trip! Talk about an awesome Daddy… I can’t wait to hear all about their adventures when they get home! Since I can’t exactly bring him breakfast in bed, I thought it might be nice for him to wake up to a recap of the past year in photos. He does so much as a Daddy that it’s hard to capture it all, but I think I got the things that mean the most to us – coaching, snuggling, reading, running, Lego-ing, riding, laughing, running…he really does it all.

Reading MA Family Photography – A Spring Wonderland

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this family first when they were still a FAMILY OF THREE, then when BABY GIRL joined the CLAN, then AGAIN and AGAIN for more sessions through the years.  Although the kiddos get bigger (and even more adorable) with every session, one thing remains the same – they are all so comfortable, so loving, and so happy just being together.

This year’s session was touch and go for the 24 hours leading up to it.  Rain…sun…rain…sun….that was basically the pattern for the entire Spring this year in New England!  We finally decided to go ahead with the session, and I’m so incredibly glad that we did!  The blossoms were gorgeous, the children happy, and Mom and Dad were relaxed and comfortable (or at least they pretended to be!).

North Andover MA Family Photography – Rainbows and donuts

This Spring session at SMOLAK FARMS had a little bit of everything – sunshine, rain, laughing, playing, eating, exploring…even a rainbow! I loved that Mom was cool with letting some of the session be purely “lifestyle”, meaning that I was able to hang in the background and just capture things as they unfolded. We started with some more traditional shots, and then, just as the kids started to get a little antsy, we took a donut break at the farmstand. Everyone enjoyed sweet treats while I kept snapping away – resulting in some of my favorite images from the session! Once everyone refueled, the kiddos were refreshed and ready to explore some more parts of the farm.

Do you see the love in these photos?! The snuggles were comfortable, the laughter easy, and the hugs plentiful. These are some of the *most* important characteristics of a successful photo shoot!

Reading MA Family Photographer – The calm before the storm

30 minutes. That’s all we needed. A half hour to capture this vivacious, energetic, talkative, enthusiastic little girl. I do love Premium Family sessions, but I also adore the mini-sessions that often follow – to capture birthdays, milestones, or just a memorable activity. I first met this cutie at her ONE YEAR SESSION, and she’s only grown more adorable in the past year!

The weather forecast was rather foreboding, but we decided to go ahead and stick with our original session time despite the forecast….and I’m so glad we did! It poured on the way home, but we captured some priceless images together before the drops began to fall 🙂

Springtime beauties

I was SO glad that we were able to squeeze this session in *just* before the last of the apple blossoms at SMOLAK FARMS disappeared for the season! Not only were the surroundings gorgeous, but those beautiful little girls were just as sweet as they look. Big sis got out of the car with a smile on her face, and welcomed me with magical stories of Elsa and Anna (you know, from Frozen?). We hiked through orchards, threw rocks in a pond, and walked through a springtime wonderland at the flower shop. I hope these images will bring back happy memories of a perfect spring morning!

North Andover MA Lifestyle Photography – A Mother’s Love

Mothers are so many things to so many people. Nurturers, healers, confidants, chefs, housekeepers, chauffeurs, psychologists, coaches…and, very often, the family photographers. Unfortunately, most mothers find themselves behind the camera much more than in front of it. So often, I hear moms lament the fact that they hardly have any photos with their own babies. That’s why I adore these Mother’s Day mini-sessions! I know how important the images are, and just how much they will be enjoyed both now and for years to come.

This year’s sessions took place at SMOLAK FARMS in North Andover, MA. While the farm is beautiful in any season, there is something magical about springtime amidst rows and rows of beautifully blooming fruit trees. Of course, we are in New England – a notoriously challenging area for weather forecasters. People joke that if you don’t like the weather, just wait 20 minutes! Well, when we started shooting on the big day, everything was dry and the temps were comfortably high. I thought we had lucked out! I think you see where this is going….

About a half hour later, it started raining. And didn’t stop for the next 3 hours! I was so grateful that all of the mothers and children that came out that day were completely ok with getting a little wet. Despite the dreary weather, I enjoyed capturing mothers doing exactly what they do best: playing, laughing, loving, and snuggling their babies.

There’s no place like home… [Methuen MA newborn photographer]

…for a newborn session!
When mom first contacted me about this session, she was concerned that their house wasn’t big enough or fancy enough for a photo session. Luckily, with kids this cute, we don’t need anything else! Although they did have a lovely home, we ended up plopping down on Mom and Dad’s bed, and barely moving for the whole time I was there! Between the snuggles, books, and giggles, we were able to keep busy and happy while capturing these sweet images of those magical first moments as a family of four.
No interior decorator necessary.

Julia’s first birthday party! [Methuen MA Lifestyle Photographer]

March 15

See that girl up there? That’s my baby. The same baby girl who looked into my eyes a year ago, curled her tiny hand around my finger, and instantly stole my heart. She is turning one this week, and I already yearn for those newborn days. I miss sitting on the couch and snuggling for hours while one episode of house hunters blends into the next. I long for that warm, sweet breath against my neck as she takes a much needed nap on my chest. I miss the excitement of witnessing the first smile, laugh, roll and step. Yes, this first year of life is amazing and fleeting and filled with irreplaceable memories; but at the same time, I find myself dreaming about what the future has in store for her. Will she continue to look up to her brothers with adoring eyes, begging to join in their games of Legos and trucks? What books will she like? Will she enjoy science like her Mama? Will her love of music and movement lead her to years of dance classes? Will she still welcome me into her life when she goes through the dreaded middle school years?

Only time will tell what life has in store for Julia. In the meantime, we enjoyed celebrating this important milestone! I wish I could take credit for all of the gorgeous details, but I owe it all to some amazing ladies! The incredible candy buffet was courtesy of the fantastic duo over at The Candy Dish in North Andover. I can’t recommend them enough! Not only did they provide all of the yummy treats, but they also set everything up beautifully, and then came and CLEANED EVERYTHING UP after the party! They also sell a variety of amazing homemade candies – perfect for Easter Baskets 😉

The Pinterest-inspired dum-dum decorations were courtesy of my dear friend Lindsay – a woman with a big heart and a ton of patience! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Happy First Birthday, Julia! What a wonderful first party it was!

Lifestyle, My Family

A very, very, very fine house [Methuen MA Family Photographer]

We ran, we laughed, we biked, we played….we did all of the things that this family loves doing in their beautiful home. It was a celebration of sorts. One last hurrah before moving into their new, even MORE amazing home a few towns over! I was so happy to capture memories of this beautiful morning so that they will be able to look back on these photos years from now and remember the house that these boys called home for the first years of their lives.

California Dreaming [Methuen MA Lifestyle Photographer]

As I saw down to catch up on blogging, I was a bit overwhelmed by how far behind I was. I haven’t even gone through the images from our family trip to Cape Cod last July, but for some reason I just couldn’t resist starting with my recent trip to Cali! I had an amazing girls’ week with my daughter, mother and sister in sunny (warm, gorgeous) Southern California. Of course we enjoyed the ocean breezes and sand in our toes, but it was truly all of the laughing, eating, walking, and shopping that made this such a fantastic week. Just looking through these images is helping me forget about the foot of snow currently outside my window. Well, almost…

Baby brother [Lowell MA Newborn Photographer]

Just like his big brother TWO YEARS AGO, this sweet little guy was sleepy, content, and more than happy to pose for his newborn session this fall! We had originally planned to do most of the session indoors, but were lucky enough to have a gorgeous fall day – so we found a pile of leaves and hung out there for awhile!

Eventually, we did move inside to capture some holiday card pics and spend some time with Great-Grandpa.

It’s been so much fun watching this family grow (and grow up!). Next time I see them, those boys will be running circles around me!

2013 in Review

2013 was a whirlwind year for me – both at Sarah Jordan Photography and at home. We welcomed a new daughter into our lives, watched as our boys grew out of toddlerhood, and enjoyed meeting and photographing a record number of families. I hope you enjoy this little video review of the past year!

I am so grateful for each and every family that trusts me to capture their love and personality in images. Thank you! I can’t wait to catch up with many of you again in 2014 🙂

2013 – An image a day [Methuen, MA Family Photographer]

I didn’t plan on doing a 365 Project again this year. In fact, I had consciously decided against it. Taking a photo of my life every single day is rewarding, but can also be time consuming and at times stressful. So I entered 2013 with the intention of recording just one photo per week.

That plan lasted all of 2 days.

That’s how long it took me to realized that a 365 Project really doesn’t HAVE to be time consuming – or stressful! This year, I gave myself permission to miss a day here and there if inspiration didn’t strike. I also forced myself to let go of the notion that every image had to be photographically perfect. The goal was to capture images that reflected my family as they are right now – with true emotions, natural settings, and less time with Mommy behind the camera.

I’m proud to say that not only was this year’s project a success, but it was actually enjoyable! So much so that I’m going to continue daily photos for 2014, too.

This year was filled with so many amazing things that I want to remember forever – birthdays, recitals, my big baby belly, vacations, and, of course, a new family member! There were also lots of quiet, in-between moments that are somehow just as significant. Last year, I compiled all of my yearly images into a big album for my family to enjoy. That book has been well-loved this year, and I can’t wait to get the 2013 edition!

Lifestyle, My Family

Life. In style. [Andover MA Lifestyle Newborn Photographer]

While I do enjoy doing some classically posed newborn photography, my heart feels fullest during a lifestyle newborn session. The term “lifestyle” refers to a type of photography that focuses on the interactions between people in everyday situations. There are no artificial lights, no forced poses, and the goal is to document life as it happens in an artistic way.

This session was filled with exactly that. What you see is what you get! Big sis genuinely adored her little brother, and the whole family enjoyed simply being together. We read books, jumped on the bed, snuggled….all things that characterize this amazing family’s life together.
