On the road

I’m excited and honored to be traveling to NY this weekend for a session with two adorable (and hopefully happy) little newborn boys. I will return all emails and phone calls when I get back!

The perfect gift

It happens every year. You think and think and think, then shop ’till you drop, and STILL, that “perfect gift” you chose for your sister (or mom, or friend…you get it) sits on the shelf collecting dust. Personally, I love gift-giving at the holidays, but our family has started to place a higher value on experiences and memories than “stuff.” Of course, there will be a good number of boxes under the tree on Christmas morning, but the things I’m most excited about giving and receiving include a trip to NYC, dinner out, and, of course, lots of photos. There will be albums, prints, maybe even a mug or canvas for special people around me. Because photos never fail to bring a smile to the recipient.

You can spoil your own loved ones with the gift of photography this year with beautiful, personalized, wrapped (if you’d like) gift cards to Sarah Jordan Photography. Email me for more info, and together we can create a perfect holiday gift.

Good luck

Anyone need any extra luck? It seems we have some to spare around our house! Hudson and I went searching for 4 leaf clovers in our backyard, and came up with 23. TWENTY THREE! Crazy! And some of them actually had 5 or 6 leaves! Thinking I should go buy a lotto ticket or something…

What’s better than a doughnut?

A doughnut covered in icing and candy, of course! We spent the morning at Smolak Farm in North Andover for their Doughnut Festival. Not only did the boys have a fabulous time decorating doughnuts, but I was somehow able to convince them not to eat their treats until AFTER naptime. I’m enjoying an hour of quiet before the inevitable sugar-high starts up!

That’s what it’s all about

Theirs is the most classic, most beautiful, most heart warming kind of love story. The type that involves an undeniable – almost immediate – bond, and an immense challenge to overcome. You see, they met at work, became friends, and found themselves spending as much time as possible together. But since a “day at the office” for this couple means serving and protecting our country, they aren’t afforded the luxury of knowing where – or for how long – they will be stationed together. I suppose that living with that sort of uncertainty for any length of time has a way of forcing a person to take a long, hard look at what *really* matters in life. For these two, love reigns supreme.

I am honored to say that the bride is my incredibly beautiful cousin. The same girl with whom I caught lightening bugs, got in trouble for giggling too much at the dinner table, and spent a week each summer enjoying sun and sand and causing general shenanigans on the Cape. The girl I grew up with.

B, congratulations to you and your new husband on your wedding day! The way you looked at J…the way he looked at you…you are destined for a long and wonderful life together. I can’t even imagine how hard it must be to be apart from your husband once again, but just think of the reunion you will have!

Thank you for sharing your special day with my family and me. We enjoyed the beautiful simplicity of the day and how everything and everyone was focused on the same thing – your love. No fussy transportation, no band, no over-the-top decorations, not even a bouquet toss…just a simple ceremony to perfectly represent the true love you have found in one another. Congratulations, you two. May you always be as in love as you were on your wedding day!

My own soundtrack

Some of my most vivid childhood memories include a unique soundtrack. No, not the radio…but rather, my mom’s piano students playing in our family room for hours every afternoon when we got home from school. My sister and I got to know the lesson books so well that we could predict exactly how our mother would critique a particular song after a student finished playing it. I guess that’s why it seemed so natural for me to start teaching lessons of my own when I was ready to get my first job.

Since then, I’ve taken on more and more students, and my mother and I have become coworkers in a sense. We brainstorm together, substitute teach for each other, and once a year, we join forces to organize a huge piano recital. For the past 5 years, we have been incredibly lucky to hold it at the Nevin’s Memorial Library in Methuen – a beautiful big hall with plenty of seating and wonderful acoustics.

As much as I look forward to the recital all year, it’s always a bit of a relief when it’s over. My students may get butterflies before playing their songs, but I am one big nervous mess the entire time! I want so badly for each and every student to have a good time and come away from the experience feeling proud. I think I can say with confidence that all of my students met – and exceeded – my hopes and expectations for them this year. Now it’s time to start getting ready for next year!

I don’t shoot weddings.

But….I actually had an amazing time photographing my cousin getting married yesterday! The love, the beauty, the excitement…it might just be enough to make me change my mind – someday…

Enjoy your sneak peek, guys! You make one extremely gorgeous couple.

Pinkle Toes: Behind the Scenes Part 1

It’s been a little over a month since I got home from the amazing PINKLE TOES professional photographer workshop in Austin TX, and I’m finally finding a little time to go through all of my behind-the-scenes images. To say that I learned a lot would be an understatement. Not only did I get to talk shop with other talented photographers for 3 days straight, but I also had the opportunity to observe Michele (Pinkle Toes herself) in action at an in-home photo session. As a self-taught photographer, it was awesome to be a fly on the wall while Michele worked her magic.

Another one of my favorite parts of the workshop was urban location scouting in Austin.  Since we didn’t have any models with us, we all took turns being on the other side of the lens.  Let me tell you, I have a whole new appreciation for my clients after that experience!  Apparently, telling someone to “just relax” is a lot easier said than done…

Later, we all headed to the blue bonnets to get some shots of each other in the wildflowers at sunset. I was lucky enough to get to work with Lauren Reynolds, of LAUREN REYNOLDS PHOTOGRAPHY…and yes, she is as kind as she is beautiful!

A space of my own

Well, it finally happened! After months of planning, a dream came true for me today. I finally have my own “gallery” space! I am the proud owner (well, renter? user?) of a beautiful brick wall in the lobby of IMAJINE THAT – a fabulous indoor playspace in Lawrence, MA. I tried to grab some pics of the finished product before we left, but it was already starting to get pretty dark…I think you’ll get the idea, though. Come stop by and check it out in person soon!
Thanks so much to my amazing husband and my skilled father for helping with the install – let’s just say that the bricks and concrete made things a bit challenging. You guys are the best!

It’s finally done!

Welcome to the new site! It’s taken me a lot longer than expected to get this up and running, due in part to the fact that I’ve been incredibly busy taking, editing, and ordering images for so many wonderful families. I also realized (a little too late) that I probably should have taken at least one class on html (or programming or computer science or web design or information technology) before taking on a project like this! I’m very proud to have completed it on my own, though, and I hope you will take a few minutes to look around and check out what Sarah Jordan Photography is all about.

Hello world!

Not only was this little girl a dream to work with, but I was almost giddy when I saw the clothes in her closet! And those stuffed friends?! Is there such a thing as too much cuteness?
