2011 Year in Review

2011 was a whirlwind around here!  A good kind of whirlwind, filled with smiles, hugs, adorable kids, and lots and lots of laughs.  Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that Sarah Jordan Photography would grow so quickly, and I am immensely grateful to the many families who trusted me to capture their lives in images.  As I wrapped up the loose ends from the past year, I thought it might be fun to share a slideshow of some of the most memorable images from 2011.

Click below to enjoy the show!

***PS – If you had a session in 2011, don’t forget that submissions for the 2011 Pic of the Year are due by Saturday!  There are some awesome prizes up for grab!

Happy Holidays!

Looking back through the images I’ve taken in the past year makes my heart swell a bit, because each photo evokes memories of the the families I had the pleasure of working with. I have the awesome honor of documenting some of life’s most important milestones – engagements, births, high school graduations – and all of the amazing little moments in between. In fact, it’s those “between” moments that sometimes mean the most. A smile, a smirk, an airplane ride on Daddy’s leg, giggles between siblings, a mother’s gaze…I get to capture it all.

Thank you for an amazing year, everyone. I can’t imagine my life without you in it!

Thankful

I didn’t write a “thankful” post on Thanksgiving this year because I was too busy enjoying the holiday with some of my closest family. Watching Oliver help Grammy prepare the gravy, Hudson bask in the glow of spending time with Uncle Thomas, and my mother and mother-in-law laugh while cleaning up the kitchen together…these are memories that I will treasure forever. The only thing that could have made the day even better would be having my sister and her boyfriend there too. Maybe next year….

(And yes, these are snapshots. Because everyone needs snapshots – even photographers!)

Then, this morning, I walked into the kitchen to find another beautiful scene. My mother-in-law is Swedish, and makes traditional pepparkakor (gingersnaps) every Christmas to share with friends, family, and anyone else who has been in her good graces that year 🙂 It requires hours of rolling, cutting, and baking – but the result is an amazingly thin cookie that melts in your mouth. This year, she surprised the boys by bringing dough to our house and enlisting their help in the yummy task. They had a blast, and ate so much sugar that we needed to go for a family hike afterwards to burn off some of the energy. Now *this* is what the holidays are all about…

Little explorers

I felt right at home during this session! Two high-energy little boys, often running in opposite directions and determined to explore every inch of our session location. I loved it! We lucked out again with the weather, too – it drizzled both before and afterwards, but stayed dry long enough for us to play and laugh during the shoot. Such a fun family!

Light, Love, and Laughter

Three kids, 100 sticky degrees, and about a trillion mosquitoes. Seems like a recipe for disaster rather than a photo shoot!
And yet…not only did we make it through the session, but everyone managed to have fun and look amazing at the same time. Of course, it helped that we were in a beautiful park surrounded by the most gorgeous late-summer light. I think beautiful light makes everyone happier. Even if they are being attacked by ginormous blood-sucking bugs.

Having Fun

During the planning phase of this session, Mom told me that she wanted photos “of the boys having fun, just doing what they do.” So, we played!

One of my favorite things about this session was witnessing the strong bond between brothers. Big bro knew just how to make the little guy laugh, and giggles spilled everywhere when they hugged/wrestled. I think the only thing better than hanging out with the boys was watching their mother’s face as she looked on from the sidelines.

More Fall Fun

A few more snaps of my boys (and girl) apple picking yesterday…

Now we’re gearing up for an afternoon of baking! Bring on the cinnamon 🙂

Kids, My Family

Welcome Fall

If there’s one thing I like more than summer in New England…it’s autumn in New England! We had a blast at Smolak Farm’s Apple Festival today – apple picking with Johnny Appleseed, singalongs, great food, wagon and hay rides, and even selecting the perfect pumpkin. It’s all happening again Sunday, so head on over if you are looking for something fun and “fallish” to do with (or without!) the kids.

Welcome home, Darby!

It’s hard to describe how much this little girl means to our family. She was our first baby, and we often remind Hudson and Ollie that they need to love and respect their big sister! Most mornings, Oliver and I come downstairs first and he snuggles up to Darby in her dog bed, gently spreading his beloved blanket all around her. Hudson adores taking her for walks and playing fetch in the back yard. She is such a good girl that neighbors often think she has an electric collar because she chases squirrels at full speed precisely until she reaches the property line! At night, she’s my editing buddy – curling up in my lap as I spend endless hours in front of the computer.

When she got sick last week, we were devastated to hear the vet even suggest the possibility that she might not make it. We still don’t understand the exact cause, but she suffered from acute kidney failure, and without the love, medicine, and dedication of the staff at Bulger Animal Hospital, she might not be with us today. The boys and I were overjoyed to pick her up today, and we are crossing our fingers that her condition continues to improve in the coming days. For now, though, we are just focused on giving our little girl as much love as we possibly can!

My Family

A glance

It’s not that I *want* him to be overly dependent on me, or have attachment issues when I leave. I don’t want him to be sad or upset or even shed a single tear. But one glance back at his Mama as he marched into school today would have been nice….
