Newburyport photographer – The best laid plans…

….well, you know the rest.

Last Spring, this family reserved a session to take place in the sunflower field. I visited the farm a few days before the session to make sure I knew the light and the grounds, and I was excited to capture the girls amidst the beautiful flowers! Then, it got cold. Very cold overnight. Cold enough that there was a frost, and all of those beautiful sunflowers wilted into sad brown stalks. Soooooo…..we changed our plans on the spot, headed over to Newburyport, and wandered from beautiful brick walls to bright flowers, and eventually down to the beach. The evening was warm, and the fog was so dense that we could barely see the water from the parking lot by the time we left! It was really unique and a very different type of beach setting than I usually get to shoot.

It may not have been what we expected, but sometimes spontaneity provides the most memorable, enjoyable, and beautiful images.

Urban sunset [Newburyport family photographer]

As much as I like flowers and fields, sometimes the beauty of an urban setting just suits a family better! We had a blast walking around looking for hidden alleyways, cool walls, and of course pretty light.

The session took a bit longer than we expected because we kept getting stopped by strangers who wanted to say hi to that awesome doggy! He is seriously the softest, sweetest, snuggliest pup I’ve ever met.

The perfect location

Sometimes, choosing the best location for a photo session can be a bit tricky. I like to use places where kids feel comfortable, there aren’t tons of people, and, of course, we need an interesting and/or beautiful backdrop for the images. In this case, it took about 2 seconds to decide on the perfect place for our shoot: the beach! These kiddos live so close to the ocean that they spend most summer nights picnicking here at sunset. Not a bad way to grow up, huh?
So, on the night of the session, Mom packed some yummy treats, a few beach toys, and met me at their family hang-out. I just happened to be there with my camera 🙂
I love how organic, spontaneous and natural these images are – all because everyone felt right at home.
