Smolak Farms Apple Season!

Smolak Farms apple picking season is here! Along with crisp weather, snuggly sweaters, fire pits, a rainbow of foliage, and pumpkin spice everything. I love all things fall, and nothing beats this time of year at SMOLAK FARMS in North Andover, MA. There are lots of orchards in this area, but Smolak is the only one I know of with an ANTIQUE APPLE ORCHARD that includes 20 varieties of apples, many of which are no longer grown for commercial harvest. And the best part? The orchard is small enough that even little ones can easily walk around the whole thing and collect a sample (or two or three) of each type of apple.

My daughter and I visited the antique orchard last week, and had a blast picking each variety as we strolled the farm. Afterwards, we cut them up and tried bites of each! Some favorites were the “Sheep’s Nose,” “Pink Pearl,” “Winter Banana,” and “Sops of Wine.” Even the names are pretty fun!

The Antique orchard opens to the public on September 30 (we got early access as CSA members), so if you’re looking for a new apple picking experience, check it out for yourself! One tip: this place is so awesome that everyone loves visiting – especially on weekends. If you can make it there during the week, you’ll have the orchard to yourselves! Grab some food at the farmstead (a cider doughnut sundae, perhaps?) and make an evening of it!

Smolak Farms Whim Dinner Series 2017

I can’t think of a better way to welcome the official start of summer than by enjoying a gourmet farm-to-table dinner at the bucolic Smolak Farms in North Andover! Everything was ideal for Smolak’s first Whim dinner of the year last night, featuring Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse (Chef Danny Levesque), and O’Brien Estate Winery. The sun set peacefully over the hill behind the elegant tent, while the staff of Davio’s prepared a mouth watering four-course meal in the open air kitchen.

After a brief welcome from Michael Smolak and Davio’s owner Steve DiFillippo, diners enjoyed a first course of Hand-Rolled Potato Gnocchi with Chanterelles, English Peas, Parmigiano, and Lemon Butter.

Next up was a Watermelon Salad with Strawberries, Baby Arugula, Feta Cheese, and Lemon-Mint Dressing. Watching the plate assembly was like watching an artist paint a masterpiece! The colors alone were gorgeous! Of course, it tasted even better than it looked.

The main course of the evening was Brandt Beef Short Ribs with Parmigiano Farro and Baby Vegetables – cooked to perfection, served beautifully, and oh-so-tender!

Last but not least, the evening finished up with Honey Lavender Crème Brulee and Smolak Farm Berries.

Acelleron Maternal Health and Wellness

5 years ago, I stumbled upon a prenatal yoga class at Maternal Health and Fitness that helped me relax, slow down, and enjoy my second pregnancy. Of course, the yoga itself was fantastic – but I also looked forward to class because it was a time to chat with other mothers, get advice when I needed it, and make new friends.

That’s why I was thrilled to hear that Maternal Health and Fitness joined forces with Acelleron Medical Products to create Acelleron Maternal Health and Wellness – a “premier pregnancy and parenting wellness center focused on providing the resources and supportive community parents need to become empowered in the process of growing their family.” The new space is warm, inviting, and incredibly beautiful, thanks to Beth Bourque Design Studio. Offerings now include everything from prenatal yoga and Hypnobirthing to mommy meet-ups, make-your-own baby food workshops, baby music classes, infant massage, and even breastfeeding workshops! I only wish that this facility was available when I was pregnant with my own babies!
On Saturday, I documented the grand opening festivities, including Knucklebones playspace, a visit from Elsa, face-painting, an interactive music class, and a make-your-own baby food workshop. It was an inspiring day!

Acelleron

I was honored and excited to create the wall art used to decorate the new space. Although I love all of the images we chose, I’m particularly excited about the breastfeeding images in the lobby. As a breastfeeding mother, I know that sometimes it can be awkward and intimidating to nurse in public. I hope that images such as these help to normalize breastfeeding, and help mothers feel more confident in their right to feed their babies whenever and wherever they are hungry!

The sense of acceptance and care that greets you when you enter Acelleron Maternal Health and Wellness is due in large part to the fantastic women who have devoted a tremendous amount of time and energy to creating such a supportive environment for families. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of them without a smile!

North Andover MA Photographer – Whim Dinner

Last night, I photographed another amazing Whim Dinner for Smolak Farms in North Andover MA. This fresh, delicious, and fun event is held every Wednesday during the summer, and is a unique way to enjoy some creative menus from some of the areas most incredible chefs! Last night’s feast was prepared by Chef Andy Husbands, from Tremont 647 in Boston’s South End.

Branching out

As you likely know, the focus of my photography has always been centered on families. Babies, toddlers, even parents-to-be are often featured on this site. So when musician Cate Kanell contacted me about doing a session, it would have been easy to say, “I don’t do that.” The thing is, it sounded pretty fun! She needed images for her next album cover, publicity items, and her website…hmmm…I was very interested. Even more so after I sat down and listened to some of her honest, heartfelt music.  So we picked a date, a beautiful location, and started planning! I loved taking the time to pull together multiple outfits, figure out the “feel” she wanted in various images, and work together to achieve her vision.  I’m pretty excited about how it all turned out! Now I can’t wait to see what she chooses for her next album cover 😉
