American Girl – Smolak Farms Breakfast

When I had my first baby boy 6 1/2 years ago, I entered a world of trucks, ninjas and superheros that was completely foreign to me. Over time, and with the addition of another energetic little guy, I got more comfortable with all the things that come with being a boy mom. I learned the name of every kind of truck, got almost as excited about construction sites as they did, and I came to accept the dirt, noise, and general chaos that filled my life. Then I had a daughter. A daughter who loves dolls, dresses, and sparkles.

I still enjoy the rough-and-tumble adventures I get to take with my boys, but also appreciate balancing things out a bit with manicures, shopping trips and quiet, gentle snuggles every once in awhile.

Yesterday, my mother, daughter and I attended a decadent American Girl breakfast at Smolak Farms. We enjoyed homemade quiche, donuts, scones, hot chocolate, cider, and treat after treat as we worked on crafts and played games. I was a little unsure if my daughter would be too young to participate in all of the festivities, but she was just enthralled by her surroundings, and loved being around the “big kids”.

(To be clear, the boys were invited to come with me to the breakfast too, but declined the invitation when they realized that they wouldn’t be allowed to drive a tractor at the farm.)

North Andover Kids Photographer – Action packed

Sometimes, lots of planning before a session is really helpful. The family and I can come up with ideas for activities to do during the session, emotions we want to capture, and special items we want to incorporate into the photos.
But more often than not, we get to a session and the kids have an entirely different plan. They don’t want to read the books we’ve brought or the hot chocolate we made, and instead they want to run through the fields and pick wildflowers for their mom. And that’s absolutely fine with me! During this family session, we did do some of the things we had planned, but they were very brief. It turns out that all we really needed was wide open space, some flowers and leaves! The kids had a blast, and I certainly got my exercise for the day. Perfection!

Acelleron Maternal Health and Wellness

5 years ago, I stumbled upon a prenatal yoga class at Maternal Health and Fitness that helped me relax, slow down, and enjoy my second pregnancy. Of course, the yoga itself was fantastic – but I also looked forward to class because it was a time to chat with other mothers, get advice when I needed it, and make new friends.

That’s why I was thrilled to hear that Maternal Health and Fitness joined forces with Acelleron Medical Products to create Acelleron Maternal Health and Wellness – a “premier pregnancy and parenting wellness center focused on providing the resources and supportive community parents need to become empowered in the process of growing their family.” The new space is warm, inviting, and incredibly beautiful, thanks to Beth Bourque Design Studio. Offerings now include everything from prenatal yoga and Hypnobirthing to mommy meet-ups, make-your-own baby food workshops, baby music classes, infant massage, and even breastfeeding workshops! I only wish that this facility was available when I was pregnant with my own babies!
On Saturday, I documented the grand opening festivities, including Knucklebones playspace, a visit from Elsa, face-painting, an interactive music class, and a make-your-own baby food workshop. It was an inspiring day!

I was honored and excited to create the wall art used to decorate the new space. Although I love all of the images we chose, I’m particularly excited about the breastfeeding images in the lobby. As a breastfeeding mother, I know that sometimes it can be awkward and intimidating to nurse in public. I hope that images such as these help to normalize breastfeeding, and help mothers feel more confident in their right to feed their babies whenever and wherever they are hungry!

The sense of acceptance and care that greets you when you enter Acelleron Maternal Health and Wellness is due in large part to the fantastic women who have devoted a tremendous amount of time and energy to creating such a supportive environment for families. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of them without a smile!

Congrats, ladies! And good luck on your fabulous new adventure!

Apple orchard session – Sweet as pie

This young lady is no stranger to the camera. Her acting and modeling resume is already rather impressive…and she’s only in first grade! (You can check out her talent HERE)

When we were planning the session, Mom wrote, “This time, I want her to just be a kid, having fun, showing off her currently toothless grin and being happy! I don’t want to worry about stray hairs, or everything being perfect.” So, we did just that! We laughed, ran, played, and even picked some apples. We didn’t stop to fix anyone’s hair, and we didn’t worry about posing everyone just right. But somehow, I think the images we captured are…well…pretty perfect!

North Andover Lifestyle Photographer – Cloud nine

This little guy only needs a few things to make him happy: bubbles, flowers, a ball, and – of course – his parents! Luckily, we had all of the above at his session, and he was on cloud nine the whole time we played together! We explored a beautiful new location, and everyone enjoyed the peaceful scenery and gorgeous light.

A new tradition [Smolak Farms North Andover MA Photographer]

Christmas is a big deal in our house. The holiday season is filled with baking, decorating, evening drives to check out lights, hot chocolate, Christmas movies, advent calendars, secret santas, The Polar Express, and, of course, 24/7 Christmas music. It’s been this way for as long as I can remember, but having young children makes everything even more exciting and magical.

Choosing a Christmas tree was always something the boys looked forward to, but this year we decided to make it a true adventure. Instead of hitting up one of the roadside stands that we usually go to, we decided to head to SMOLAK FARMS in North Andover, MA for a cut-your-own tree expedition. I knew the kids would enjoy it….but it turned out to be even more wonderful than we had imagined! Not only did they love the challenge of scouring the fields for the perfect tree, but CUTTING IT DOWN? With a SAW?? Yup, they were in heaven. Once the tree was safely secured on the car, we headed to the farm stand for more holiday fun! The kids were invited to decorate cookies, do some crafts, and even write a letter to Santa! They enjoyed their treats, while my husband and I relaxed with some hard earned coffee and donuts. We haven’t even decorated the tree yet, and the boys are already talking about doing it again next year!

Of course, I HAD to grab a few photos before we headed off to the field 😉 Thanks to my mother for helping me get a few shots with our whole family together!

Smiles and snuggles [North Andover MA Family Photographer]

You may remember this gorgeous family, who has been featured on my blog every fall for FOUR years now! They’ve always been easygoing and fun to photograph, but this was the first year that I think even the youngest member was out of the “run away from the photographer” phase – making for a sincerely relaxing, loving session filled with smiles and snuggles. I can’t wait to fill their yearly album with these images. They are starting to amass quite an impressive collection!

Six months already!

My sweet baby girl is sixth months old! Her smile is contagious, and her giggles make my heart swell. Watching my boys snuggle her, play with her, love her – I can’t think of anything more gratifying. Sometimes I wish time would slow down a bit, but the truth is that I have been soaking up every second of her babyness since the day we welcomed her into our family. The nice thing about motherhood the third time around is that I KNOW how fast this time will fly by, and I am much better at appreciating the little moments that are so easy to take for granted.
I’ve learned not to stress about the little things. She wants to snuggle all day? Ok with me! I didn’t really want to clean the house anyway 😉 She doesn’t like to sleep in her own crib? That’s ok – I love waking up to her warm breath and sweet smile cuddled in close to me! There is plenty of time for her to be a big girl. For now, she is my baby…and I know how fleeting this stage is.

Remember September…

Way back when it was still nice and warm out, I got to hang out with this happy bunch at Smolak Farms for a few hours. Baby girl was so full of smiles that I couldn’t stop snapping pics of her! Her older siblings were equally awesome to work with, and we had a fabulous time running, playing, tickling, chasing and enjoying a beautiful day in a beautiful place 🙂

2012: My Project 365

Exactly one year ago today, I began the most intensive personal photography project I’ve ever attempted – a Project 365. For all of 2012, I captured one image a day that reflected something about my life. Most photos involved my two little boys, since, well, my life basically revolves around them 🙂 Of course, there were times that I wasn’t with them (like my sister’s wedding in Mexico!) and days when I chose to capture a different subject in my life, but looking at the completed project makes me acutely aware of the depth of my love for my family.

I’m not gonna lie – some days this project was just plain hard. There were days when it rained all day, the kids (or I) were sick, and it got to be 5pm before I remembered to drag out the camera bag. But then there were others where photo ops seemed to throw themselves at me all day long! Our family vacations, daytrips, days when the boys were happy and the sun was shining…it was often hard to choose just one image!

I learned a lot in the past year, and the lessons were not always related to photography. I learned to slow down and look around. To notice the little things – pockets of beauty where I least expect to find them. I learned the importance of capturing memories for my boys, since life can change in the blink of an eye. It’s already a bit hard to look back at the first few images of 2012 and remember just how dramatically they’ve grown in the past year.

Although I won’t be doing a Project 365 for 2013, I will continue to bring my camera wherever I can. Watching my boys as they viewed this year’s slideshow for the first time was absolutely wonderful. They laughed, squealed, and smiled as they relived the memories of 2012. In fact, they’ve been talking about our adventures for the past hour, and we are already planning out an amazing 2013. THAT is my inspiration. I will continue to shoot with their giggles, happiness, and love in mind.

For those of you curious (and patient enough) to watch my culminating project of 2012, I present to you….

**The slideshow will take a minute or two to load (more if you are viewing on a mobile device), so turn on your speakers, sit back, and wait for the show to begin!

  1. Cindy says: Sarah, I cant express how much I enjoyed watching the slide show. I watched it twice and I told David he couldn't jump in to view it half-way....he had to start at the very beginning. :-) You have a beautiful family and you and Simon really are blessed! I look forward to future editions of Project 365! It brought us a lot of joy! xo on 07.27.13 @ 12:56 pm

Giggles and wiggles

The LAST TIME I had the pleasure of playing with these little guys, baby brother was just a few days old! This time around, he was a giggly, wiggly, happy little explorer. Big bro still had the same sweet personality, but a much bigger vocabulary to go with it! I loved how awake and energetic everyone was at the crack of dawn…and we were rewarded with a beautiful morning for a photo session.

Some newborns…

Some newborns come home from the hospital and sleep for what seems like two weeks straight. Others are so intrigued by the bright, new world around them that they barely blink during their entire photo session! The great thing is that you likely can’t tell the difference when you see the photos 🙂

This little beauty made us work for it, but our efforts paid off when she snuggled in and took a refreshing 5-minute doze.

I always love when I have the chance to get to know a couple during a maternity session. It’s so nice to already feel “connected” to the family before the little one is even born! Since I’m extremely behind on posting these days, I suppose I should also share their maternity images from a few months ago…

Slow down

From the second I got pregnant with my first child, everyone said it.
“Time flies.”
“Savor every moment.”
And every day I realize even more clearly how right they were.
But sometimes seeing other people’s children grow is even more eye-opening than watching my own. I first met these handsome boys and their parents at little G’s NEWBORN SESSION a year and a half ago. Now, he is a happy, energetic, truck-loving little guy with a smile so bright that it brought grins to the lips of strangers that passed by us during the session.
Now if time would slow down a bit so we can enjoy those toddler giggles for just a bit longer…

Spring Fling

Every time I photograph an event for The Mother Connection, I find myself having as much as the party-goers themselves! The Spring Fling last week was no exception. With the help of a rockin’ dj, fun games and yummy food, everyone had a blast celebrating the beginning of Spring in New England!
